Popular bargain hunting sites – February 2007

Update: for the latest revision of this list go to Popular deal sites - April 2011.

This is the February 2007 revision of the Popular Bargain Hunting web sites list. You can find the last month revision of the list here.

The change in rating shows the difference compared to January results. The list has a total of 46 web sites. There are 23 more in my database that didn’t meet the Alexa Rank < 100,000 requirement. Two web sited dropped out of the list, keepcash.com and trezr.com (info).

The biggest loser this month is gottadeal.com with whooping -121.69% change in Alexa rank. The site is still suffering from the sharp after-holiday drop. The rank is 3 months rolling average and should be bottoming out this month. Here is how it changed over time:

Gottadeal Rank

The winner this month is deals2buy.com with a modest gain of 11.91%. The site is now holding position #8, which is up from #9 in January and #13 the month before. The success doesn't go unnoticed and competitors are eager to replicate it.

Enjoy the full list below and as usual, let me know in comments if I missed your favorite website. Coupon sites are coming soon in a separate list!

Why not rank sites on their respective keyword rankings in the top 3 instead of ranking them on Alexa?

  2. 2 Yan Mar 1st, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Could you elaborate? What keywords do you suggest to use?

  3. 3 AnthonyD Mar 1st, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Well, since we all are bargain sites…

How about a listing of the biggest changes in Google, Yahoo and Msn changes for relevant keywords.

    eg: Deals, Dell Computers, etc.

    Regards,

    Anthony

It is debatable what keywords is best to include. Although I agree seeing some SERP ranks in this table could be interesting. Let me sit on the idea.

Can you think of 5 broad high traffic keywords that would qualify? I guess listing just Google ranks would do.

  5. 5 AnthonyD Mar 2nd, 2007 at 12:10 am

That would be subjective…as I’m sure everyone on here is optimized best for various keywords.

Maybe include Yahoo and one other engine as well?

  6. 6 Yan Mar 2nd, 2007 at 12:24 am

Google would be sufficient as it covers major share of the search traffic.

The problem is with picking keywords. Let’s get more input on this. If we come up with 3-5 broad high traffic keywords, then I might as well tweak the script to show the SERP ranks in the table.

Deal, Bargain probably don’t qualify as they don’t bring many requests.
Coupon, Coupon Code is better. Other ideas?
I don’t run a deals site (in the general meaning of it) so I am really not in the position to judge.

There is a new comparison site:
    http://snapshot.compete.com/slickdeals.net fatwallet.com anandtech.com
I am not sure how accurate it is, but the #’s are more meaningful, so instead of some overall ranking #, you can see the # of users.
I think they’re in cahoots with couponmountain because every search for a store shows their coupons, but in a few sites I tried, it seemed pretty decent.

If you think Compete or Quantcast give more precise numbers, think again. Here is an interesting real life example which proves that both of these tools can be wrong by as much as 8x to 12x.

In fact I like that Alexa is not giving the numbers in visitors or page views. This is not what they measure. Unless you install a measuring pixel (like the one from SiteMeter on my blog) you will not be able to get exact figures, just a relative estimate.

Cool post, wow, it must take a while to compile all that data. It is pretty interesting to see each of the site traffic patterns.

Seems like Google must have made some changes and affected many of the coupon site rankings.

Is it rumor or fact that Google will soon try to “label” affiliate sites (with prejudice?) so that the rankings will be adversely affected?

  11. 11 Yan Mar 3rd, 2007 at 12:01 pm

I haven’t heard anything about it. I attribute the overall slide in ranks to the after-holiday period. Ranks were on the rise in October-December.

Perhaps you could include quantity of inbound links, # pages of indexed..

Also, include other Alexa like services like compete and quantcast.

    Hi Yan –

I work for Quantcast and thought I would pop in and comment.

Affiliates have the same problems that many publishers have… namely a lack of high quality comparative data. Our estimates are good, but because of the inherent limitations of panels they may still not be perfect.

For the first time, publishers can let the truth be known. Widely and for free. Sites that Quantify improve the accuracy of their profile via direct traffic measurement, better representing themselves with partners, clients and potential advertisers.

Given that the Internet is inherently measurable, why not do it?

I’m actually surprised that you show “ableshoppers.com” in the list. AbleShoppers.com is nothing but a complete RIP of the Bens Bargains site. Look at their deals and text, it’s the SAME order as Bens Bargains.

  15. 15 Yan Mar 9th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

What can I say, their “business model” works. ;-)

I have noticed the resemblance but unfortunately I don’t have the resources to single out these websites.

  16. 16 Digital Kaos Mar 9th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

Yes, which is why there are tons of other copycat sites who do the same thing.. Share the wealth, as they say…
