Woot team launches a deals site

Wine.Woot, Shirt.Woot, Sellout.Woot, Kids.Woot, and now Deals.Woot! Just in time for the holidays the team that basically invented deal a day shopping is expanding Woot-empire, and this time it is all about community… well… kind of. When you open the front page, roughly half of the screen above the fold is dedicated to sponsored deals - a moderated content provided by partners, so you judge how community friendly Deals.Woot really is. ;-)

Overall the site has a neat design and somewhat resembles Digg. Adding your own deal is easy and takes just a few mouse clicks. Interestingly that voting is restricted only to the members who have ever purchased anything from any of the Woot properties. Here is how Woot explains the restriction:

We restrict voting to users who have purchased something from one of the other Woot stores. It’s not just because we want your money (which we do) - it’s the best way to be sure all the votes are coming from real people and not spam-bots or phony accounts. The best way we can think of, anyway. For now.

When you submit a deal it is placed into the ‘Fresh’ list and will sit there until it gets promoted to the ‘Popular’ list based on deal activity and some other black magic. The FAQ doesn’t disclose how this exactly happens but one can guess that number of votes, clicks and comments gets involved.

In addition there is also a discussion area which is envisioned to be the place to go if you need a ‘deal question’ answered. Right now, since the site just launched, it is filled with questions related to the website functionality. You can find members bitching about expired deals and other typical ‘deal site’ stuff.

The sole most valuable asset Deals.Woot possesses is the active community of Woot admirers, many of whom are core bargain hunters. It is not unusual for a single deal to gather 50-60 comments, the only other deal site I know that can challenge Woot in this regard is SlickDeals.

I will be curious to see how well it fairs in the coming months. For some reason it reminds me of the first wave of social deal sites that launched in 2006. Not all of them have survived. What do you think, does Deals.Woot have a chance?

Bing Cashback can cost you money

Imagine you are an owner of a small antique shop on Main street of a tourist town called ‘Bing’. You are doing your business just fine, the sales are not great but enough to make ends meet. Now imagine the township announces new initiative targeted to bring more visitors to the town, they call it ‘Cashback’. Should you accept, you will get your front door remodeled for free and the village will advertise your business. However there is a catch - you are required to pay back each customer who buys something at your store a percentage of the sale. The idea is that as customers see the cash flowing back to their wallets they will tell about ‘Bing Cashback’ to their friends who will want to take a tour of the town as well. ‘Bing’ of course has more than antique shops on Main street, but this is besides the point.

Now imagine that your shop has a backdoor which wasn’t remodeled, and by the way, this was the door that all your regulars have used all the time before you got on ‘Bing Cashback’, and they still do.

Two things can happen in this imaginary world:

  • If you keep your prices low (at the level before you joined ‘Bing Cashback’) you will hurt your bottom line
  • If you raise your prices to compensate for the lost revenue, you will hurt your regulars, who still use the backdoor and don’t get cash back

It sure feels like your business is doomed either way, that is unless you have a magician friend, ‘Marketer’, who comes up with a ‘genius’ solution. He invents special glasses that when used will make the price on all your merchandise look higher, and he then suggests to give out the glasses to everyone who comes in the store through the ‘Bing’ remodeled frontdoor. You take on the advice, your business is booming until one day an ‘unforeseeable disaster’ happens - one of your customers takes off the glasses and sees the lower prices!

This is what in essence happened today with a New Jersey based electronics seller Butterfly Photo when Meghani, a blogger at search engine startup Bountii, exposed their ‘magic glasses’ practices to the world.

Butterfly Photo set a three month cookie on my computer to indicate that I came from Bing. Any product I look at for the next three months may show a different price than I’d get by going there directly.

Meghani claims he knows ‘more than a few instances’ of this kind of ‘magic marketing’, but he unfortunately doesn’t name the specific stores.

On one hand, the online world has opened new unimaginable before marketing opportunities as well as new ‘creative’ ways for businesses to scam their customers. On the other hand, thanks to social media, ‘business failures’ like this have become more costly for business owners which to some extend counter balances the situation. Overall I feel excited to live at the time I do and be a part of this ‘online revolution’.

What is your experience with Bing? Have you ever been a target of the dual price ‘magic marketing’? Do you think Bing Cashback will bring Microsoft success in a similar way the banks have benefited by hooking their customers to the cash back rewards credit cards?

Holiday Deals from American Express

amex-wishlist

American Express Holiday Wishlist was a big thing back in 2007 and in 2006 when I last time participated. Last year was a disappointment as I couldn’t get on any of the deals - the quantities were so limited and the offers would sell out in seconds. Let’s see if this time is going to be different.

It is worth to note that American Express has now turned the Wishlist into a year around enterprise but the variety and quantities increase as the holidays approach and so in theory the chances of getting anything should improve (unless the demand increases proportionally). Below is the schedule for the current week. In addition to these, there is a few secondary smaller offers plus some not so great promotions that you can take part in at any time (‘Shop Anytime’ section):

Tuesday, Nov 24

  • $100 American Express Gift Card for $50.00 (Total Qty: 75)

Can PMS make women shop more?

If you are a guy like myself there is a chance you have not heard of PMS, or premenstrual syndrome. However unless you are a bachelor living under a rock, I bet you have felt it on yourself many times. When that time comes, some women turn to chocolate or macaroni and cheese, others are acting cranky at their husband/boyfriend. Here is how MedecineNet defines PMS:

A combination of physical and mood disturbances that occur in the last half of a woman’s menstrual cycle after ovulation and normally end with the onset of the menstrual flow. Physical features of the premenstrual syndrome (PMS) include breast tenderness and bloating. Psychological changes include anger and depression.

Those psychological changes as it seems can lead to interesting side effects. A new study finds that some women tend to resort to retail therapy as a way of dealing with the PMS related stress.

… in the ten days before their periods begin - known as the luteal phase - women are much less in control of their spending habits. Psychologists at Hertfordshire University concluded that a shopping spree could be a way of dealing with the intense emotions of pre-menstrual syndrome…

443 women ages 18 to 50 were examined. Of the 153 women who were in the luteal phase, two thirds admitted to making an impulse buy and 57% said they overspent by more than $35. So ladies, now if you have a shopping splurge, you have a perfect excuse, and to better time things, here is a handy website and a Facebook App to help you out! ;-)

Seriously though it feels more like a conspiracy involving National Retail Federation than a scientific finding. Granted, women are under stress and some are seeking relief in a shopping spree however I feel if you generally tend to indulge yourself with a shopping frenzy then PMS is as good of an excuse as anything else.

What is your take on it? Does this “science” have legs or is it full of BS? Share your opinion in the comments!
