Recession times bring leaner rewards to Chase

Bad news for all the Chase Freedom card holders myself including. Chase has just announced a launch of Ultimate Rewards, an inferior program aimed to replace the current lofty rewards structure offered to existing Chase Freedom cardholders.

I just called Chase customer support and the representative confirmed that changes are afoot however declined to give any details suggesting that I will receive a ‘Welcome’ package with all the information I need to know about the new program.

Reports however have been surfacing all over the web since as early as November of 2008 from card holders who received the “upgrade” package. The bits of information I have put together so far confirm a couple of important facts:

  • The $250 Chase Freedom Cash Check which you could get for $200 in cash back is being phased out
  • The 3% cash back spending categories will be rotating every quarter - very much like the current structure offered by Discover More

WSJ says that all Chase Freedom cardholders will be moved to the rewards program throughout the year. Chase hasn’t spared the $30 per year Freedom Plus card either, according to the customer service rep I spoke with tonight. Too bad because this has been my primary card.

What is next?

I am going to look into a couple cards that I know offer straight 2% cash back rewards: one from Schwab and one from Fidelity. I think I prefer to have to open an investment account (even if it comes with $1000 minimum balance requirement) to the tiered rewards structure of AmEx Blue Cash (another alternative consider).

SonyCard $200 credit with $349 purchase

Just stumbled upon this promotion from Sony Card. Get instant approval and a $200 credit after your first qualifying Sony Card purchase of $349 or more when you sign up to the credit card.

There is no sign-up fee, no annual fee, and you don’t have to keep the card once you get and spend the $200. You must sign up on or before March 14st, 2009 and your single $349 purchase must be made within 45 days. Offer available to new Sony Card accounts only.

An added benefit to this card is that you earn 5 points with each $1 you spend at the Sony Store which can be redeemed at www.sonystyle.com, I had this card before when it offered cash back instead of the points and canceled it when Chase (the issuer) changed the terms.

Free Grand Slam breakfast at Denny’s

I am sure if you watched Super Bowl last night you didn’t miss the Denny’s commercials. In case you are not much of a sports fan (like myself) and missed it, the restaurant chain is offering a free Grand Slam breakfast tomorrow, February 3, from 6am till 2pm to everyone who shows up (and of course while supplies last :-) ). The meal includes two pancakes, two eggs, two links of sausage and two strips of bacon. You can find a Denny’s restaurant near you using this link.

TurboTax 2008 online deals

This is a roundup of the current promotions on the online version of TurboTax tax preparation software, the kind of software I have used for several years and will use this time as well.

Pick the type that fits your needs (Basic, Deluxe, Premier, or Home & Business), compare the prices below, and use the link to go to the promotion page. Bookmark it and make sure to use the same link every time you go back to continue your taxes.

It looks like I will go with Fidelity or USAA this year. I need Home and Business (both federal and state) and these companies offer the best discount. Please tell me which software you use. Also comment if you know any other on-going TurboTax promotion and I will update this blog post.
