Chase Freedom Plus – 3% cash back in 6 categories

Chase Freedom PlusChase has lured me in with the $250 sign up bonus last March and despite the usual fate of cards with these promotional offers (I tend to close most of them after some use) this one stuck with me thanks to the great cash back rewards it offers.

In fact it has become my primary credit card ever since except for dining and travel expenses which I still charge to my American Express from Costco.

I have just learned that Chase has sweetened the Freedom offer with a Plus card which in mostly the same card but with certain important improvements.

How does Chase Freedom work?

Chase sorts out all your spendings into a few categories like Gasoline, Eating out, Groceries, Utility bills, etc. At the end of each statement period Chase picks 3 categories where you spend the most and pays you back 3% in cash back or points, whatever you choose. In addition you earn a flat 1% on everything else.

If you wait till you collect $200 in rewards then the amount goes up to $250 essentially turning your 3% into 3.75% and 1% into 1.25%

How is Freedom Plus different?

I called the number on the application screen and spent some time verifying the information. It appears there are two important changes according to the rep.

  1. The number of bonus categories increases from 3 to 6;
  2. The rewards cap for bonus categories is lifted

These are very good changes. The traditional Chase Freedom card caps the extra 2% you could earn to $12 per statement period. I have been hitting that cap consistently over the past months effectively under-earning rewards. No cap for me would mean more rewards.

While on the phone, I also confirmed that this new card has no $30 annual fee which was mistakenly mentioned on one of the application pages.

Update: a reader reports that there is a $30 annual fee which is waived the first year. The reps at the application hot line refer to it as a “membership fee”

New customers get 10,000 miles

The application page also mentions a 10,000 miles bonus for new customers which they earn after the first purchase made on the card. I am not sure what happens if you vote for cash back instead of points when you apply for the card. I will update this post as I find more information about this promotion.

Should you apply?

If you already have the regular Chase Freedom card, the upgrade should be a no-brainer. The Chase Freedom Plus is arguably the best card on the market for average folks.

If you don’t think your spending pattern falls under the “average” category, you might consider other cards. There are some good promotions mentioned here, also this post summarizes how I personally use credit cards.

$100 after $250 in purchases with Citi Professional

Update 09/13: Citibank has discontinued this promotion. You can find more sign up offers like this one here

Citi $100 gift card offerCredit cards are my passion, I don’t seem to miss a single decent offer. They save me money (cash back rewards and 0% balance offers), they offer convenience (not having to deal with cash), some provide extra warranty and insurance coverage. I use credit cards a lot!

I have spent some time today to examine all on-going credit card promotions and this $100 gift card from Citi looks like the hottest deal out there (excluding probably just the last offer from AmEx which I was told is expiring this week). Let’s take a closer look at what this card is worth.

Citi Professional Card with ThankYou network (offer link)

  • $100 gift card after $250 in purchases (promotion!)
  • 3 ThankYou Points for every dollar you spend at restaurants, gas stations, on auto rentals and certain office supply merchants
  • 1 ThankYou Point on every other dollar spent

$100 sounds very tempting. Let’s see if I miss anything on the rewards part should I switch to this card permanently. I think any cash back card offering same rewards is superior to a ThankYou card because you don’t have to deal with the hassle of converting points to the things you need. Here for comparison are 3 popular cash back cards from Citibank. (this promotion has expired)

Alternative cards

Citi Professional Cash CardCiti Professional Cash Card (offer link)

  • 3% cash back on purchases at restaurants, gas stations, on auto rentals & at certain office supply merchants.
  • 1% on all other purchases

This card is identical to the one above except you miss on the promotion bonus ($100 gift card) but will be getting cash instead of ThankYou points (ThankYou points are rewards points that you can exchange for merchandise or for gift cards from participating merchants at ThankYouNetwork).

Citi Cash Returns CardCiti CashReturns Card (offer link)

  • First 3 months: 5% on all purchases
  • Thereafter: 1% on all purchases after

Straight 5% for 3 months sounds like a good deal. This would be the card of my choice if I expected a lot of upcoming expenses. For example airline tickets for my trip to Ukraine for the entire family were around $5000 which means I would get $250 right there. Otherwise, I would not sign up to this card. 3 months is too little time to rip the benefits. (this promotion has expired)

Citi Divident Platinum SelectCiti Divident Platinum Select (offer link)

  • First 6 months: 5% cash back at gas stations, supermarkets and drug stores, convenience stores, and utilities including cable. 1% on all other purchases
  • Thereafter: 2% cash back at gas stations, supermarkets and drug stores, convenience stores, and utilities including cable. 1% on all other purchases

I currently have this card. For the first 6 months it offered very good cash back rate but after 6 months were over I had to switch to Chase Freedom which offers 3% on similar spending categories plus each time you collect $200 in rewards account, Chase will add $50 which effectively increases your cashback rate from 3% to 3.75%. (this promotion has expired)

Conclusion

Citi Professional with ThankYou network is designed for professionals with significant auto rental and office supply expenses. If it wasn’t for the $100 gift card bonus I would suggest Citi Professional Cash Card instead since it offers the same rewards but in cash.

For us, the average folks with full time jobs, I recommend Chase Freedom. The cashback rate is slightly higher (read above) and rewards categories are a better fit. By the way, it comes with a signup bonus as well, although currently only $50.

Chase, Mint viability, and web scraping

Chase VerificationIt is interesting how much attention this small company captured over the past week. Search for mint money management on Google and you get almost 2 million results. I made my own contribution just yesterday where I was questioning the viability of this service. Using web scraping for obtaining financial data is one of the problems.

Web scraping is a technique that allows web services (often called web bots) to take web pages apart and filter out information, banking transactions in this case. My understanding is that when Yodlee is doing it on Mint’s behalf, the banks don’t necessarily know their pages are being scraped. (more on web scraping from Wikipedia)

I gave it some more thought today and I think I know why Mint (and Yodlee) are having problems fetching Chase credit card transactions. If you have an account with Chase, you probably noticed the extra layer of security Chase introduced recently. Now every time you access your account from a new computer/browser you have to confirm that this is a trusted location by entering a verification code they send to your e-mail or cell phone. Since Mint (Yodlee) has to login to your account before they can scrap transactions from the web pages, they have to go through the same verification process as you do and since they have no access to your email they obviously can’t pass it.

The bottom line is, Mint will continue having these issues unless Yodlee is able to strike a deal with Chase (and other banks in the future) to allow them retrieve your transactions through other means or passing around this extra security verification. Is it likely? I don’t know but from my own experience I can tell you a lot about how slow and self-protecting large corporations are.

This situation probably puts Mint in very uncomfortable position at very inconvenient time. It is ironic how life of a startup can depend on such a seemingly small thing. Web scraping has always been a shady business and I am surprised that Yodlee has gone with it so far.

Six Flags Promotion – 4 tickets for $99

Update: this offer has expired. More Six Flags deals can be found at Buxr.com

Six Flags Theme Park is a great place to go with kids. Unfortunately the ticket prices can be pretty steep. General admission is $54.99 for adults and $34.99 for kids when you pay at the gate.

Thanks to this promotion sponsored by Chase, now through June 30, 2007, you can get a 4-pack of tickets for just $99. This is a very good price if you just plan an occasional trip. For frequent visitors — seasonal pass is a better deal.

Well, at least you don’t have to each cockroaches this time. ;-)

Chase Freedom Visa card $250 signup bonus

Update: This promotion has expired and the card is no longer available.

This is one of those fat signup bonus offers that I try not to miss. You know I like credit cards, don’t you? :-)

Go to chase.com and look for an ad like the one below. Refresh your browser a few times if you don’t see it right away. It is on the front page. Click on it to apply for a new Chase Freedom Visa card card.

After you sign up and make a purchase or balance transfer, you will receive $200 in bonus rebates which can be redeemed for a $250 check, according to the promo. I just applied and got an instant approval.

Important! The bonus offer is valid only for first-time cardmembers with new accounts. Only one bonus per account. Existing cardmembers/accounts are not eligible for this bonus offer. Read pricing and terms at this link.

Someone at FatWallet found this promo, the discussion is 10 pages long right now and everyone is just going nuts. ;-)
