CompUSA to close all of its remaining stores

Compusa LogoThey already closed half of the stores this past February, including the only local store in my area. Now CNN Money reports that after this holiday shopping is over CompUSA will close all of its remaining 103 stores in the US.

Dallas-based CompUSA has struggled for nearly a decade with falling prices on personal computers, its most important product, and competition from big-box retailers such as Best Buy.

This is bad news for CompUSA but good news for bargain hunters since the chain will likely run an aggressive store closing sales during this holiday shopping season to get rid of remaining inventory. Long term however this is not so good since it takes away some of the competition from the market.

Despite what others tell me, I can’t say I was very unhappy with CompUSA. They usually had a better variety of computer related products than CircuitCity and BestBuy and it is unfortunate that they haven’t been able to pull off.

Do you have a CompUSA in the area? Have you liked them?

Linksys Wireless-G Network Kit for $4.99 AR

Update: Went out of stock while I was writing about it! Available for pick-up in store only. This holiday season is crazy!

I think I am going to get on this one. My 802-11b network at home needs an upgrade and I doubt I will find a better deal any time soon. This wireless router comes with a wireless PCI card for laptop, which is just what I need.

Another good thing about this particular offer is that you can apply for the rebate online at erebates.compusa.com. I hate mailing those receipts. Have to hurry though, this offer expires today, November 28, 2007!

Which laptop should I buy?

I am looking at the low-end Black Friday laptop offerings. My old IBM Thinkpad running 366MHz Intel Pentium II badly needs a replacement (yeah, I am that cheap ;-)). I will mainly use it for word processing, Internet browsing, and basic image editing (that pretty much sums up my midnight blogging :-)).

Here is a quick roundup of all promotions I have found around the forums and web sites. What do you think? I am leaning towards the Circuit City one since I don’t really need a 80GB hard drive. The only concern is the quality of these brands. I like my IBM laptop a lot, is Compaq going to be much worse?

Update 11/21: added unadvertised Best Buy Toshiba laptop

Black Friday CompUSA ad leaked

Finally the real stuff starts to show up. BFAds.net — one of the Black Friday companies I mentioned earlier — has posted a full scan of CompUSA Black Friday ad.

Among other things the ad features a Compaq Presario notebook for $199 and a 23-inch LCD Flat Panel HD Ready TV for $99. Both require a purchase of Motorola RAZR phone ($29.99) with a new service plan.

Make a note of these bargains. The company had to remove the Best Buy ad scan that they posted previously.

With prices dropping to these levels this shopping season is promising to be a lot of fun!
