Popular deal sites – April 2009

This is April 2009 revision of the Popular Deal Sites list. You can find the last month revision of the list here.

The change in rating shows the difference compared to March results and includes all deal sites from my database that meet Alexa Rank < 100,000 requirement. The list has 41 sites, same number as last month. Also, this month I discovered a new deal site which I am adding to my list (can you guess which one?)

The average deal site lost 2.02% in Alexa rank this month with dealslist.com (-24.33%) and fatwallet.com (-18.95%) losing most of all. The top gainers this month are slickdeals.net (12.86%) and buxr.com (12.1%).

Popular deal sites – January 2008

This is January 2008 revision of the Popular Deal Sites list. You can find the last month revision of the list here.

The change in rating shows the difference compared to December results. The list has a total of 32 web sites. There are 50 more in my database that didn’t meet the Alexa Rank < 100,000 requirement.

The holidays are over and overall trend has changed from positive to negative. Average Alexa rank change this month is -1.45%. The only big mover though is judysbook.com (-37.57%) which keeps sliding down ever since they announced the sale of the website.

On the brighter side slickdeals.net (4.51%) has got back it’s Page Rank 6 after it was reduced to 5 back in October last year. Rightly so, the forum has not had a single negative month since July 2007 and is now far ahead of the runner up, fatwallet.com (-0.13%), if you trust Alexa. Compete however shows a completely different picture.

Share deals and win prizes, Buxr.com has come!

First Prize: iPod Touch

Today is a special day for me and my partner Mike at CSB. We have just launched our year long project - Buxr.com

To share with you the excitement of this day, we are offering iPod Touch, iPod Nano, and 8 Flash Drives as prizes in the contest that starts today, December 3, 2007. You can find the launch announcement and official contest rules at Buxr Blog here. Also, the press release about Buxr launch is available here.

It is not the contest and the prizes that I want to talk about though. I want to bring up for discussion our idea, the idea that brought Buxr to live. If I only had to use one sentence to explain it, it would be “Let people with web presence share hot deals and earn money”. Here is how it was born.

How Buxr.com was born

I started ProBargianHunter in September 2006 eager to share with you my thoughts about the deals & coupons business. One of my first posts was about how deal sites make money. The realization that the entire business is based on commission sales came rather quickly.

I don’t have many affiliate links on this blog yet during this holiday season my affiliate sales easily beat revenue from Google Adsense. I can imagine that popular forums like SlickDeals make millions during November-December shopping time.

The success came to FatWallet when they pioneered revenue sharing business model on a deal site. Everyone with an account at the FatWallet forum could use special links and get so called FatCash which is essentially cash back from the sale commissions. Bravo Tim and others from FatWallet team! One day I must visit Rockford and play some ping-pong with you. Isn’t it what you guys do all day long? ;-)

Why it will be a success

Now, tell me what was the most significant event in your life related to Internet? For me it was starting this blog. Guess what, over 120,000 of them are created every day, according to Technorati State of the Live Web report for April, 2007. I am sure some of these newly baked bloggers love sharing hot shopping deals like I do. And if freeing hot deals is not a compelling enough reason, Buxr.com offers half of the sale commission to the publisher.

Monetizing a blog about shopping deals and frugality is not a trivial task. I post occasional bargains on my blog but I gave up on linking each and every one via appropriate Affiliate network. With less popular blogs this is just too much effort that doesn’t pay off adequately. The blog software (WordPress in my case) is not designed to support it naturally, and the plug-ins I tried didn’t solve the problem either. The Buxr Widget offers bloggers to be a part of the show and not spend much of their precious time doing so.

I will write more about Buxr Widget in the coming weeks, I will also share with you some of our future plans with the project. Meanwhile, check out the widget I embedded in this blog post and tell me, why do you think Buxr.com is going to succeed or fail. Shoot it out!

How to get in the next issue of Wired

Wired have bought into my April joke and featured it in the last issue of the magazine. Just kidding. ;-) What you see below is a cover page that I built using the tool that Wired themselves offer for everyone to use.

In just a few minutes you can build a cover page for yourself by changing the headline and customizing the background image. Click here to feature in the next [fake] issue of Wired.

SlickDeals, FatWallet join forces, launch new site

Exclusive on ProBargainHunter

Encouraged by the success of an experimental project launched last year to test the market, owners of SlickDeals and FatWallet, two popular online bargain hunting destinations, have agreed to join forces and are together launching a new website which will combine the best qualities of the two.

I was lucky to get a sneak peek at the forthcoming press release last night and here are some of the highlighted features

  • Powerful feature rich forums utilizing AJAX and Javascript
  • Customized user signatures and avatars with no size limit
  • Integrated collection of 10,000 preconfigured smiles
  • Forum administrators elected via open user vote
  • Woot off type auctions running every day including Weekends and holidays
  • Cash back on purchases equal to the entire affiliate commission received from merchants (MoneyBackCo style but without membership fee)
  • Discussing competing deals sites is encouraged and rewarded with “Competition” points, each equal to five old “Reputation” points

The new business entity is expected to launch as a corporation with future plans for IPO and to help spread the buzz, a promotion will be announced where active forum participants are granted a stock option for every hour they spend online.

There has been no agreement reached yet over what the domain name will be and the marketing teams are still bouncing between two possible candidates, SlickWallet and FatDeals, but this small problem is not going to stand on the way for long and the official announcement is expected sometimes next week.
