It is only the first day of November but I feel like the holiday shopping season is in full swing. Wal-Mart is already teasing customers with $200 computers and early sales and tomorrow is one of them.
Here is what’s announced so far, for more information go to this Wal-Mart page.
- Fisher-Price NASCAR Ride-on for $144.72
- Sanyo 50” Plasma HDTV for $998.00
- Acer Laptop 1GB RAM for $348.00
- HD DVD’s for $14.96
- Toshiba HD-A2 DVD Player for $98.87
The laptop and DVD Player look pretty hot. What do you think?

This is not what I usually have in mind when I think of a home PC. The CPU is VIA C7 1.5GHz embedded in a Mini-ITX motherboard. The hard drive is puny 80 GBytes and RAM is just 512MB. However it is more than enough for home office application and web browsing, and it is a perfect computer for small kids (and I do mean small ;-) ).
Everex’s TC2502 gPC is the first mass-market $200 desktop computer featuring a custom distribution of Ubuntu Linux and it is now available online and at select Wal-Mart stores around the US. “It’s $200, with no gimmicks or subsidies,” as Everex spokesman David Liu claimed probably hinting to the OLPC initiative.
“It’s almost like a Google PC,” Liu says, pointing to the desktop’s rack of pre-configured links to all of Google’s online applications. It is, he says, the mass-market Linux PC we’ve all been waiting for. “That’s our dream. … we go the final step to make it work out the box, to go the whole nine yards.”
I am sure this is not the last bargain PC to be announced this holiday season, but knowing Wal-Mart it might well be the cheapest one.
